Masculine Idolatry

The belief that resilience
and self-sufficiency
are cardinal virtues
is a noxious
cultural value
fed by trauma imbued
with a contorted
can-do
ethos.

Light, fluffy hopes don’t
fortify the soul
but loudly and proudly
mock
the fractured and vulnerable
with stories of
redemption
and triumph.

That which does
not kill us
still can thrash
our optimism
until it’s brutally choked
out
leaving us
broken
exhausted
isolated
and ever closer
to death.
